Detectives interviewed Smith three times, but he refused to answer their questions, and no further charges were brought.

In his medical practice, he was active in serving the needs of deaf persons using American sign language, and he was a physician advisor for local emergency medical technicians. When he was a medical resident, he dreamed of volunteering in an African country. Before returning to his own practice, Philip climbed Mount Kenya and Mount Kilimanjaro.

The man responsible for the attack was on bail for previously kidnapping and assaulting Christie and had been released on bail 32 days before he killed her. John Phillip Smith, 47, known to his friends as JP, went to be with the Lord on Friday, March 22, 2013, while traveling in the state of Virginia. He was born on August 26, 1965, in Anaheim, California to John W. Smith and Phyllis S. Smith. He grew up just outside Vinita helping with the family farm, graduated from Bluejacket High School in 1983, and continued with several vocational schools during his life to work as a welder, CAD operator and truck driver.

Prosecuting, Mr Tim Raggatt QC told the court that all three murders were carried out by Mr Smith. Because Lynott had worked alongside Smith at the Rainbow, West Midlands Police wished to re-examine the cause of her death. Detectives also investigated the death of a woman who had been a colleague of Smith at the Rainbow.

Then, as he drove home, he hit care worker Carol Jordan with his car and, fearing capture, beat her to death. All three bodies were discovered soon after the murders were carried out. In addition to the witnesses and CCTV footage, there was substantial forensic evidence linking Smith to the murders.
