The man responsible for the attack was on bail for previously kidnapping and assaulting Christie and had been released on bail 32 days before he killed her. John Phillip Smith, 47, known to his friends as JP, went to be with the Lord on Friday, March 22, 2013, while traveling in the state of Virginia. He was born on August 26, 1965, in Anaheim, California to John W. Smith and Phyllis S. Smith.
